Generation Hand Me Downs

NOTE: THIS POST WAS ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED JUNE 27 2018. DUE TO SITE HOST TRANSFER DATE IS INCORRECT.

It's 2018 - and it's safe to say we live in a generation of hand me downs, and that's okay. At some point in our lives, everyone has worn hand me downs. When you're young, you don't know any better (at least when I was growing up). But as you hit your teenage years you want to create an identity for yourself. I remember growing up as a child, my mom would bring out some clothes she used to wear when she was in her teenage years to her 20s. She'd tell us "look, this is what I wore, this is the style that was in, and watch, it will come back in style in a few years." Fast forward a decade, and those oddly coloured floral leggings became a trend again! Thank you Mom, for teaching me that fashion never dies. It's crazy to think how much and how little has changed in fashion.

Now, receiving hand me downs? That used to be seen as a negative thing - that those who wore hand me downs, are seen as poor, therefore resulting in a negative self identity. You start to appreciate the sentimental value from the clothing you received as you get older. You don't have to spend money on it, the style has come back as it always does (which will be proven to you in today's blog post)... So, let's just jump right into it.

1980s CLOSET

MY MOM'S CUSTOM MADE BLOUSE FROM THE 80S. She was in her 20s when she wore this.

The thin material makes for a great light layer during the Spring/Summer seasons. It's also

red, one of my favourite colours to rock this

year! With a cute little pattern too.

Best worn tied.

Take a little peak at buttons on this shirt. They're a bit heavy in comparison with the material of the top itself - but it compliments everything else!

Is this top just not the cutest? You would never be able to tell it's from the 80s right? It's one of a kind! Literally. Since it's custom.

JUMPING BACK TO THE 80s

This interesting little number is VERY lightweight. Now, this you'll definitely be able to tell it's from the 80s, but that's the best part! You see here that fashion has changed quite a bit, you definitely won't find a number like this, but the style can never be out! This number isn't particularly my favourite... Sorry Mom.. But I mean, my mom was about my age when she wore this. How cool is that?!

1990s CLOSET

I rock this on a regular basis, and I am not ashamed from it. Most people in Canada rock denim jackets, but do you rock one from 1996? I bet you don't!

This denim jacket belongs to my sister Cindy, who wore this when she was just 13 years old, hence 1996. I was only 3 years old! Her name was actually written on this somewhere but that washed off.

NIKE WINDBREAKER

This old 90s windbreaker is straight from my sister Cindy's closet as well. She wore this when I was just a little baby. Almost 20 years later, this style is very much back in style. You'll see all types of windbreakers now! Cropped, oversized, pefectly fitted, all colours, you name it.

Last but not least.. FLORAL DRESSES

Floral dresses. Need I say more?

This cute little number belongs to my other sister, Steph. She wore this when she was in Grade 8, so about 13-14 years old as well. This is a cute little number that can be taken around town, on a date night, wherever you please. Dress it up, dress it down.

I personally love wearing dresses, especially floral ones for the summer. So this is a gem in my closet.

So, my point...

"I think there is beauty in everything. What 'normal' people perceive as ugly, I can usually see something of beauty in it."—Alexander McQueen

Fashion is form of expressing yourself, your own personality. You want to show the world who you are, not through your parent's clothes, or your sisters clothes. But, I'm here today to tell you - that fashion never dies, it's okay to wear old clothes, no body cares about how much it costs! It's how you wear it!
